For Christmas, Sawyer received spinning lessons from his wife. Sawyer is a paramedic on the local squad and I’ve found him very easy to teach. He has a male propensity to understand how things work together. ‘Dressing’ a wheel is a snap for him. Understanding fiber characteristics is no problem. Tensioning is his current assignment, but after just 3 hours at the wheel, Sawyer produced a 2-ply worsted weight wool of merino, camel, and golden retriever. He hand-carded the batts himself, spun it, plyed it, and used the niddy-noddy to skein it. I sent him home to wash it and set the twist.
He’s a wonderful treadler–slow, steady, rhythmic– and a relaxed spinner. I expect him to be an excellent maker of yarn in no time at all. His wife knits and together, they’ll make a heck of a team. Way to go, Sawyer!
