As many of you know, we are involved with foster care for New England Border Collie Rescue. Our latest dog is Buddy, who is a 1 year old deaf bc.
Yesterday Bob & Nancy drove up from Mass with their 10 year old bc Fred to meet Buddy & to take him for a week trial. If Buddy fits in & seems happy, he will stay with Bob, Nancy, & Fred.
Bud & Fred got along well and played ’herd’ and ‘gimme the bone’ in the doggie play pen outside. Once in the house they ran around & sniffed everything and then calmed down with peanut butter bones while the humans chatted.
Then Bud got a new harness and he & Fred got clipped into the seat belts in the back of the SUV, they laid down on their blankets and away they went into the sunset. I think Buddy will like it there–Nancy & Fred obviously love their dogs and they were great playing with Bud & rubbing his ears and talking to him. Fred seemed a little worried that Bud was actually going home with him, like “Hey, wait a minute. I thought we were just VISITING this guy—why is he in my car? I’m not sure I want a brother”.
Our house this morning is strangely quiet. No Buddy galloping thru on his flat feet, no Bud barking to go outside. His bowl is empty next to the dog food crock. Brandon picked a Buddy hair off his socks (Buddy has 4″ long big white hairs, everywhere!) and looked sad & sighed and murmured “I wonder if Buddy is up yet”. I am torn between missing the big lug and enjoying a little peace & quiet. That dog could fill a room with his personality. He was the equivalent of 4 dogs. Well, we’ll see if he stays down in Mass or if he comes back next weekend.
